Lawn Care in Killearn, FL

Sixty years ago the ground under Killearn was open dairy pasture. In 1964 a group led by J.T. Williams, with attorney Mallory Horne and Bill Cartee, bought 3,800 acres of the Velda Dairy Farm and began laying out what became Killearn Estates, and later Killearn Acres and Killearn Lakes. It was the first planned community in Tallahassee to put its utilities underground. Together those neighborhoods now spread across more than 4,000 acres of hilly ground threaded with lakes and open space, roughly five miles north of downtown, and better than 12,000 people live on them.

The name is older than the subdivision. Killearn takes it from Killearn Gardens, the Maclay family estate that passed to the State of Florida in 1953 and operates today as Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park, and the Maclays had carried it over from the Scottish village their family came from. That is fitting history for anyone who cares what a yard looks like, because this whole side of town grew up around a property whose reputation rests entirely on cultivated landscape. Those gardens were opened to the public in 1946, decades before most of these lawns existed.

That history has real consequences for a lawn. Ground that was cleared pasture in 1964 has had six decades to grow a canopy, so plenty of Killearn yards that were full sun when the sod first went down now sit in part shade under mature oaks and pines. That changes which grass will actually hold, how high it should be cut, and how much water it genuinely needs. The rolling ground adds its own quirks, since crests scalp easily under a mower set too low and the low areas near the lakes stay soft for a day or two after a summer storm, which is why lawn mowing in Killearn is as much a question of timing as it is of equipment.
